BLS Instructor Course

The BLS Instructor Essentials course is a prerequisite for:

  • All AHA BLS Instructor candidates
  • AHA Instructors adding the BLS discipline to their teaching credentials
  • AHA National and Regional Faculty, and Training Center Faculty with a BLS discipline

The course is also an option for current AHA BLS Instructors who want to enhance their teaching skills

This self-directed, online course teaches the following general competencies identified by the International Board of Standards for Training, Performance and Instruction (IBSTPI):

  • Planning and Preparation for Courses
  • Instructing Courses
  • Conducting Written Exams, Skills Practice and Skills Testing
  • Keeping your BLS Instructor Status Current

This course also includes approximately 30 minutes of general information about instructing AHA courses, followed by BLS course-specific information. Course information is available for 12 months following online activation.

Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate of completion, which is available to print, and must be presented at the classroom portion of the instructor course. The Training Center will provide an online keycode via email to activate the web-based course upon completion of registration, with the purchase of the book package.

Heartsaver Instructor Course

The Instructor Essentials is a prerequisite for:

  • All AHA Instructor candidates
  • AHA Instructors adding other disciplines to their teaching credentials
  • AHA National and Regional Faculty, and Training Center Faculty

The course is also an option for current AHA Instructors who want to enhance their teaching skills

The course content is based on an adult learning model where participants view a scenario, compare teaching principles, and determine which skills need to be enhanced to make training effective.

Through 20 modules, the course teaches these five general competencies identified by the International Board of Standards for Training, Performance and Instruction (IBSTPI):

  • Professional Foundations
  • Planning and Preparation
  • Instructional Methods and Strategies
  • Assessment and Evaluation
  • Management

The course also includes two modules from the American Heart Association:

  • Remediation
  • Cultural Sensitivity

Participants receive a Certificate of Completion after successfully completing the course.

Instructor candidates must first align with an AHA Training Center accepting new Instructors. The Training Center will provide an authorized code to purchase course materials or the online course key. Participants complete a series of interactive lessons.

ACLS Instructor Course

The ACLS Instructor Essentials course is a prerequisite for:

  • All AHA ACLS Instructor candidates
  • AHA Instructors adding the ACLS discipline to their teaching credentials
  • AHA National and Regional Faculty, and Training Center Faculty with an ACLS discipline

The course is also an option for current AHA ACLS Instructors who want to enhance their teaching skills
